Teens and Hand Sanitizers

Recently, poison centers and emergency rooms have noticed a troubling new
trend – teens drinking ethanol hand sanitizers to get drunk.

 Hand sanitizers contain more than 60 percent ethyl alcohol (ethanol) –
more than most hard liquor.
 Drinking ethanol-based hand sanitizer can cause alcohol poisoning.
 Some teens “distill” the hand sanitizer through a process they find online.

Alcohol poisoning is dangerous! Symptoms include confusion, vomiting,
seizures, slow or irregular breathing, blue-tinged or pale skin, low body
temperature, and unconsciousness.

 Talk to your teens about the dangers of drinking hand sanitizers.
 Explain why alcohol poisoning is not a laughing matter.
 Buy hand sanitizers that don’t contain ethanol.
 If you think someone has drunk hand sanitizer to get high,
call 1-800-222-1222 to reach the experts at your local poison center.

Don’t wait for symptoms to develop!

Stockpiling Inclement Weather Days

Due to the light winter Tennessee experienced this year, many LEAs were not

required to use as many stockpiled days as in the past. Based on questions

received from several LEAs regarding the possibility of amending school

calendars to use stockpiled days to dismiss school early, the department

determined it necessary to issue guidance statewide to answer the question.

State law requires that schools maintain 180 days of classroom instruction.

The only exception authorized by state law is found at Tenn. Code Ann. §

49-6-3004, allowing schools to exceed the full 6 ½ hours of instructional time

required by law by at least ½ hour daily for the full academic year to

stockpile a maximum of 13 instructional days each year. The stockpiled days

are intended to be applied toward meeting instructional time requirements

missed. The use of the 13 days is limited to the following circumstances

approved by the commissioner of education:

-dangerous or extreme weather conditions,

-natural disaster,

-serious outbreaks of illness affecting or endangering students or staff,

-dangerous structural or environmental conditions rendering a school unsafe for use, and

-early student dismissal for faculty professional development, IEP meetings or

parent-teacher conferences

The law does not authorize the commissioner to approve the use of stockpiled

days to end the school year early

KINDERGARTEN PRE-REGISTRATION FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR

Director of Schools, Denise H. Brown, announces pre-registration for students entering Kindergarten in the Fall of 2012. Pre-registration is extremely important for planning your child’s educational program for the 2012-2013 school year. PLEASE BRING YOUR CHILD WITH YOU ON THE DAY OF PRE-REGISTRATION. Each child will be screened for kindergarten readiness, including speech. This will allow school personnel to be aware of any need that will require special services. The screening process will take approximately thirty (30) minutes.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERING SCHOOL

Kindergarten students must be five (5) years of age on or before September 30, 2012.

Each child must have a legal BIRTH CERTIFICATE or proof of birth date document. Mother’s copy is not acceptable.

A legal birth certificate may be obtained from the Unicoi County Health Department 735-5900.

Evidence of a physical examination given after August 1, 2011 must be presented. A state Physical Examination Record is available at your physician’s office or the Health Department. (Appointment card is acceptable).

Children must have completed required immunizations. These include the DPT series, Polio series, MMR series, Hepatitis B series, Hepatitis A series and Varicella (Chicken Pox) series. Immunizations are to be documented on the NEW State of Tennessee Immunization Certificate, which is available at your physician’s office or the Health Department.

Documentation of proof of residency in Unicoi County is required. This documentation must be in the form of a recent utility bill (electric, cable, land line phone, gas or water). Driver’s license is NOT acceptable.

***PLEASE BRING THE ABOVE LISTED ITEMS, ALONG WITH THE CHILD’S SOCIAL SECURITY CARD WITH YOU ON THE DAY OF PRE-REGISTRATION. ***

ATTENDANCE AREAS: Students are to pre-register in the school within their attendance area. The following school attendance areas have been established by the Unicoi County Board of Education:

Temple Hill Elementary attendance area includes the top of River Hill south to the North Carolina state line. Coffee Ridge is included in this area.

Love Chapel Elementary attendance area includes the top of River Hill north to Love Street. Love Street is not part of this area. Canah Chapel areas are also included in this area.

Rock Creek Elementary attendance area includes Love Street (both sides) north up to Tenth Street (Rock Creek Road). North Main Avenue is part of this area.

Unicoi Elementary attendance area includes the area north of Tenth Street (Rock Creek Road). It does not include Tenth Street. This also includes Jackson Road, Railroad Street and streets that feed into Railroad Street.
